Nice Surprises....

mdehnersHad a few this Spring. One was discovering a Blueberry bush that I totally forgot about! Back when we moved in, a friend had given me a couple and I planted this ratty one in the back. I figured it had died. Well, it's been hidden by Azaleas and Climbing roses but sent out a branch covered with Blueberries this yr.
Another was discovering a shriveled pod of my fav Hot Pepper while cleaning out the fridge and having the seeds within sprout! I thought I'd lost this Peruvian Heirloom for good. So, I only lost one instead of two Heirloom crops and the one I did is still available from Baker Creek so I don't feel too bad....
It's really going to kill me to pick off all those Oranges and Satsumas off the 3 new trees I Planted last Fall. The Blood Orange is esp. Packed and they're so had to find in stores anyway...
You should never let a newly planted tree bear that 1st Spring so it's Energy goes into establishing itself. Some say the 1st 3 yrs but i may allow a couple on each next yr. After all, how long am I going to be around;>?
I'm having good results in my attempts to bring my property back to the state before my brother sprayed and made it inviting to Fire Ants. I've been using a local Insecticide ONLY on Fire ANthills, leaving the Native Ants alone. I've now got the majority Native and hopefully by next yr there'll be a strong enough population of them to keep the nasty buggers from colonizing.Chris(my brother) still can't "get" why with all the crap he sprays he always gets them. Nature abhors a vacuum and nothing attracts Fire Ants more than a big stretch of ground without competition.....
