It's been no biggie here. In fact, just the opposite with a drought that's lasted a couple yrs. 'Course, with a soil pure sand;>.......
Worked out well because I'd done some planting and dividing earlier in the week. Put in a couple Angel's Trumpets, Yellow SHrimp Plant and Almond Bush that I saved from cuttings last Fall. I also planted the three Heirloom Japanese Variegated Corn plants that germinated. One of the problem with rare plants is that often some have been lost at one time to one or two growers, which means the reproduction of something so inbred is very weak. Of those 3 one looks like it got Crossed with a regular Corn plant. I'm keeping it because of the low number, I'll just Pollinate it with the others and prevent it from pollinating them. I'll also label the seed as "COntaminated". Hopefully, some of it's offspring will show the colouring and a new cultivar will be born!
This is the last yr for the East raised beds. Last yr I noted that the Oak and Honeysuckle had sent Feeder roots into it. Well, this yr the bed is like felt! Nothing Planted after Fall has done even fairly. In fact, I may lose a fair amt of the Creole Garlics. The Opium Poppies are "iffy" with only two spindly surviving plants. No EOTWAWKI this yr please;>!
The Yacon(Like a Jerusalem Artichoke that tastes like a cross between Apples and Celery...a Waldorf salad in one plat!) is doing well over bythe driveway. The other spot it didn't so it must requre Lime which the concrete gives off. It's much more attractive too compared to it's more familiar relation.
The only thing I worry about with all this rain is the Dragonfruit. I got a plant from a mailorder nursery a number of yrs ago and while it's bloomed many times, it never produced. Found out this yr that the nursery was selling a cultivar that requires a crosspollinator. I got some cuttings of other forms(all of which are self-pollinating anyway)but figured that this would be a perfect time to try the plant's hardiness. And if it dies over winter, I have both the new ones plus rooted cuttings of the original....
Cheers,
Pat
