Understanding....
May. 30th, 2009 05:46 amFor those of us who grow our own food, it's much easier to Understand much of our Ancestor's World-Views. While we have groceries and jobs to provide what our lands may not, we at least can see 1sthand, abet through a dirty window into their world....
An example is now. While I live in a climate much more gentle than my Nordic and Celtic Ancestors, botanical rhythms are just that. The Winter stores are gone, either into our stomachs or as seed into the ground. The Winter crops are finished and the Summer are immature. No fruit, no starches, no veggies. A few things may be Harvested as Greens but too much will decrease the future crop. It's a tense time for a modern gardener. For an ANcestor;>?
Much can go wrong and they didn't have the benefit of outside income or a well-stocked grocery nearby. For me I've already had Tomatoes ravaged by Possums, Broccoli by Catterpillars and an entire bed being drained of nutrients from tree feeder roots(meaning that bed will be abandoned after what little can be salvaged...). And we can just pick up what we need on the way home from Chuck's work.
Much of the Lore is the Poetic dealing with these effects on the Ancestors. 'Course, I have wild bands of Free-Range kids instead of Outlaws or Uttangearder tribesmen to deal with and you can't kill them;>....
