mdehnersOne problem growing "non-standard" crops or finding those that'll do in your area(if it's climate is unusual)is that if you do find the plants you want, they're not going to be in the quantities you need to feed your family. This means the 1st(maybe 2nd and 3rd;>) yr(s)you'll be growing for Propagation. This yr I've got 2 new ones: Okinawan Spinach and 'Bellsoy' Soybeans.
Okinawan Spinach is a relative of the houseplant Purple Passionvine and yes, it's leaves are Purple! Unlike a lot of Heat-tolerant Spinach substitutes, it actually has the taste and texture OF Spinach. It's taken me 4 yrs to find a single plant.
'Bellesoy' is a Soybean cultivar that can "deal" with warm Nights, usually the killer of Soybeans in the Deep South. Even though it's for Soybean production, I'm Hoping it's also good for Edamame(eating at the greenpea stage). With only 15 seeds, all production will be for seed production. Well, I'll test a pod and if not tastywill offer the results to those in the Deep South who wish to grow and make their own Tofu and Tempeh....
