Disposability...
Jun. 19th, 2011 08:09 amI sadly Understand why some items fall apart so quickly. We're a "Market" planet now and the way you keep the jobs is by having products that fall apart so folks will buy them again(and again and...). I esp. Understand why in the case of clothes since so many folks replace their not because they're worn but that they simply prefer something newer...as if clothes were like Dairy Products.
Personally though, I HATE most stores just BECAUSE of this and even ones that you wouldn't. Take for instance a hardware store. You'd think stuff here would be lasting, but you'd be WRONG. Appliances, parts, etc all are designed to need to be replaced. Right now I've got a toilet that keeps running off-n-on, even though all it's parts were replaced with new less than a yr ago and a ceiling fan around the same age that's making grinding noises, even after being lubed with graphite.
An on-line friend pointed out that the way things are is because of the Fall of the USSR. To a lot of people it was as if a religious war was won and with similar repercussions. The problem with Communism is that it rewards the Lazy. The Problem with Capitalism is it rewards the Greedy. And the Greedy actively take other down with them...
It "bugs" me that it's almost impossible to economically fix most things anymore. It's not been that long ago that it was actually cost-efficient to take your WHS or CD player to a handiman's shop. Today, to get something fixed is almost the price of it NEW. No wonder "fixit" shops have pretty much disappeared outside of VERY low-income areas.
