That is, as anyone who's been Reading me for any time knows, the Zombie is my fav pop monster. A BIG reason is that unlike most of the others, you can't twist it into some kind of Romantic figure(unless you're reeeeaaaallly ILL). It's as they're supposed to be, a figure to Teach Morality Tales.
Traditionally, there were two basic types with lessons attached: the Walking DIsease and the Price of Evil Actions. Both have a number of tales attached. The "Evil" Zombie genre in pop culture has pretty much disappeared except in comix and manga. The disease genre is at it's apex today with such shows as 'The Walking Dead'(which actually refers to the living, not the physically Dead).
Of the Disease Zombie genre, with a few exceptions the disaster happens because of Human Weakness. Not THEM(though in many cases could be) but how they gained Power over the Living. The Human abilities to Ignor thingsthat they'd rather not "deal" with, Procrastination, not Thinking things through and often the Evil side of Good, The Belief that Someone will Come and Fix Things So I DON'T Have To Try. The 2nd is the Human "Don't Confuse Me with Reality, I BELEIVE What I BELEIVE".
One of the Core Morals of these stories is not that Hope is Evil but HOPING that what's Going On isn't Really Happening/Not Happening Elsewhere/Happening Differently to MY Loved Ones/Etc IS.
Hoping/Striving for Something Better IS GOOD. Pretending that WHAT IS HAPPENING isn't REALLY HAPPENING isn't. Sadly, we all Know too many People prefer the LATTER....
Cheers,
Pat
