It may be almost a month to calendrical Spring but my Sinuses(as well as the trees) are telling me that it’s already here. Even the Figs are leafing out. NOT GOOD.
It does, however give a good point to review Winter’s Trial crops.
The two winners are:
Snow Pea ‘Oregon Sugar Pod II’ and Turnip ‘Boule D’Or’. Both produced gangbusters all Winter and very tasty! I recommend everyone trying these to see how they do where they live.
Not a winner but a keeper is Daikon ‘Iwai’. The reason being that there’s something in my soil that prevents bulb bormation on Radishes and Beets. ‘Iwai’ is the 1st Radish I’ve found in 15 yrs to produce consistently more than 50%. The next best was also a 2011 Winter test, ‘Chinese Green Luobo’ which had a 30%...the highest formation intil ‘I’.
Failures:
Michili-bolted before heading
Spinaches ‘Perpetual’ and ‘Prickly Seeded’. Poor germination.
Kohlrabi ‘Superschmelz’. Poor germination, though the two that did were sweet and tender enough to eat raw with a little Seasalt.
Cheers,
Pat
