WARNING! Botanidrivel;>!
Oct. 25th, 2009 06:03 amEarlier this yr, I lost the last of my Senk hybrids. These plants, the work of Saintpaulia(that's African Violet to you Botanical Muggles;>)Hybridzer Dave Senk working in the 90's with the works of 70's avante-gard Hybridizer Jimmy Dates look more like something from a Sci-Fi set than your Mom(or grandmoms) African Violets. That's when I discovered that he had disappeared a couple yrs ago. In the age of the Internet, it's unusual for folks to go "poof!" unless:
They Wish to
They were made to
Know one knows....
What's an additional sadness is that I've also discovered that the nurseries that carried his Works are casualties of the Downturn. I'm in the midst of contacting friends I'd given starts to but it doesn't look good. They were a bit of Work because of their mutations so only the true freak would go to the trouble...look at me. I let mine go as well.
AS a weirdly connected point, it got me to start working with my own hybrids again. One of the handful of preliminant Gesneriad Hybridzers(the family that African Violets, Gloxinias, Achimenes an a 100 other pretties) is pushing me to Register a few of mine. When folks like Thad or Dale tell you to get off your fanny, you do;>!
So, this Am I'll be planting seeds from my last 5 Crosses. How well they do since they've been sitting unprotected for a couple of months in Florida's Mold-ridden air...
Cheers,
Pat
