Had a little run in with a "well-meaning" Christian today. You'd think after all these yrs I'd figure out that being nice to them just ends up in an uncomfortable experience.
Well, one of the big reasons I'm not a Christian is that I not only don't Beleive in "Salvation", I don't think there's anything to be "Saved" from. This usually freaks them out because it's the Axis that their religion spins on. As I've said for DECADES, my family raised me to be Responsible AND to take Responsibility for my Actions....not some couple millenia dead Rabbi. I fuk up, I have to make it RIGHT...PERIOD.
It ALWAYS confuses them because I tell them the truth, that I know Jesus Exists, I just have no Interest in Following Him. Respect much of his Teachings but then again there are many that I do as well from and founding many Faiths. Just not Interested. As usual my comment about prefering Cascadian Farms cereal to Post or Kellogs annoyed him. The IDEA that one can Choose not only a Beleif System but Diety(s) that fit your Personality and Life(style) is too Alien. Personally,I really find those who take umbrage at the idea of "Shopping" for a religion you like finny, esp those who send folks door-to-door even to far away places to "Witness". It's the same fukkn THING.
I'd be very surprised if I didn't remain Heathen for the rest of my life. After all, I'm past my half century mark;>! But it could happen. More likely, I'd fall into the pattern I did after I left my coven in the early 80's. Basically being a Polytheistic Pagan using a modified Wiccan format. After all, I've already gone back to the Yr Wheel;>!
Truthfully, I have no problem going to Hella's Realm...which ALWAYS freaks them out. I'm not a Warrior. I've been a Healer, Hunter and Fisherman. I'm presently a Farmer(well, Gardener;>!). Truthfully, even with aids hanging over my head since the mid 80's I've never really cared about the Afterlife. I figure you do the best you can in Life and it'll all Work out for the Best. Personally? I find folks that are kinda CREEPY.
I know I should expand my circle of friends more but as this experience today reinforces, non-Christians can't be real friends with Tru Christians simply because if they truly care for you, they'll NEED to "Save" you...even form yourself. I have and have had friends who SAID they were Christians but on closer inspection I found they held to very few Christian Beleifs beyond Jesus=God. They usually never read the Bible either and as for going to church? Most seldom even made the Easter/Christmas services. I'm not a big fan of the "I am because I say I am" school of Identity/Beleif as you could guess;>....
Cheers,
Pat

...I agree that it's strange to think people shouldn't choose to be something other than their brand, when they're going out of their way to make you choose to become their brand...! I'm just not into the saviour stuff either, whatever the name of the saving dude/ette might be, since that would imply that humans and things like it are such weedy nothings that they have to be 'saved' from every basic thing, and it CAN also imply, as you say, that they/we don't have responsibility to do our best for ourselves and others...I just can't agree...if there are helpful deities/beings, great: we can get along...if there aren't, I won't be standing there all disappointed when nothing gets done, since I'll do it myself!
