mdehnersI normally don't do this but some folks who read my crap might be in the same boat. Thanks to my Upbringing, I always end up with friends who are, shall we say, of a higher socio-economic standing. They're friends and understand that I as a Disabled person can't reciprocate the value of gifts buty I'm too self-concious to give stuff that I can afford. Until I discovered a company a few yrs ago that when it went to the Internet called itself JBox(www.jbox.com).
An English teacher in Japan, he was always having friends ask him to get him stuff, from Anime/Manga oriented stuff to traditional materials. Tired of doing so, he started a business....saving my self-respect.
Even if your friends aren't Japanophiles or Anime-buffs, here you will find inexpensive gifts that will find nowhere else outside of even Japan. A favorite humour item of mine are their t-shirts, esp the signs. After all, you are not going to fnd in any other country those Universal figures warning against men peeping under ladies skirts;>. The Japanese love of regulation gives us a shitload of material that most Westerners will find hilarious.
My personal favs are the food items, from bizarre snacks to usefull cooking devices(need a Takoyaki maker;>?). For folks in offices, their lines of Bento(Japanese lunchboxes and stuff for portable meals)will impress their bosses with their Class....
There's also a lot of Metaphysical stuff. Japan is the only Industrialized nation where when you pay for your gas the register sells air fresheners and Protection Charms specifically for various car-related dangers. Be the 1st in your nieghborhood to get the Japanese equivalent of "These aren't the Droids you're looking for..." Police-avoidance carms;>....
One of the 1st gifts I bought from them is one of Chuck's fav's. It's the ubiquitous "Beconning Cat" you see in Japanese restaraunts except the hand is flipping th "bird". It's fun to watch folks when they "see";>...
