This Japanese movie just reminds us how bad American flicks have become.
It's the the story of Dai, a young married man who loses his job with the symphony(yes, the Downturn effected more than just America) and has to move he and his wife back to his hometown to live in the house his mother left him. A misprinted ad in the paper has him thinking that he's applied to a travel agent, when it's coffining company. In Japan, traditionally the Dead remain at home and the coffiners come to clean, dress and place the Dead in their coffins to be taken to the crematoriums. At 1st having to deal with the cultural practice that once was left to the Undesirable Class shocks, then as he learns the Care and Respect his boss has for the Dead AND their families(in one scene he asks the husband for his wife's favorite lipstick. The daughter brings it and he starts crying...), he realises the beauty and Spiritual practice of his job....
A beautiful film that would have NEVER been made in America since the Dead aren't blown up or walking around....
Cheers,
Pat
