Book Recommendation:'Sparrow Hill Road'
Jun. 6th, 2014 06:53 amA few yr's ago I discovered Seanan McGuire's work. It was herRosemary and Rue books and I WASN'T IMPRESSED. Sadly, that meant when her Cryptid books came out, it was a while before I tried them...remembering the Emo-crap of the R&R book I read. I finally did and fell in love with them. She also writes short stories in that Universe and you can download them for free from her website...
'SHR' is set in the Cryptid Universe but is pretty close to being a separate one because ALL main characters are DEAD. It's about the Afterlife and the many kinds there are. And the kinds of Dead there ARE.
Rose is a Hitcher, a person who died in a car accident(Hitcher is the most Benign of the type, Homecomer the Least)who tries to guide folks either to avoid their accident OR to prevent their Ghost from becoming(or acting on)one of the least savory kinds. Hitchers are known in folklore are the Phantom Passenger.
A totally unique(at least to American lit. Japanese lit contains plenty of the concept that ANYTHING Treasured becomes/has a Spirit and therefore an "Afterlife". )The most original concept in her books is that Paths have Spirits and that the World is layered with them. And they can be Good OR Evil...
A very good read!
Cheers,
Pat
