If you like History, Trivia and/or Historical Trivia you'll love this British offering.
'MM' is the exploits of a group of licensed "Mudlarks" folks who go down to the foreshore of the Thames during low tide to see what has been exposed(only a select few, including cohost Steve Brooker are allowed to do more than surface scraping). It's the live's of the general populace that is generally revealed by what fell and is later exposed by the tide. Due to the anaerobic mud Organic material is preserved and metal objects don't Oxidize, leaving surprisingly well preserved materials(Medieval shoes anyone;>?). Unsurprisingly, the most common finds since the 1500's are:
Alcohol containers
Tobacco Pipes

Pertaining to the latter was an interesting factoid that the prosperity of the American colonies could be charted to the pipes. When little was being exported, pipes were pretty much the size of Japanese Kiseru(or pot pipes for non Japanophiles;>). As the colonies grew(and expanded farming, esp of Tobacco), so did the size of the pipe bowls to the point that early Smoking wasn't called "Smoking", it was called "Dry Drunkeness". It's also where the term "Pipe Dreams" came from; Smoking so much that you were HIGH...
A lot of fun and the crew is a HOOT!
Cheers,
Pat(who's Excited that s2 of 'TIJ' has just been released on Hulu!)
