It's no surprise that I prefer vintage or classic film. A big reason is that modern cultural memes give me gas. A central one today is Selfishness, which in my Beleif system is not a Positive Value.
A good example is the Disaster genre. In classic or vintage films, the main character stays at their post/job/etc, knowing that the greatest Good will come from this(after all, the reason they're central characters IS because of this;>). In a modern flick, they abandon their posts immediately unless forced by "evil" authority figures. A modern character, given a choice whether to even save the planet or let a family member(or old boyfriend/girlfriend)die alone will choose to let the planet be destroyed. Not because they actually thought it out, just that Emotion is what rules in today's culture.
Blindly following authority is just as wrong but just because something/someone is authority (or an authority) is also as wrong to dismiss it. Today's meme(in film or reality) that military or police are intrinsically evil is another. It isn't them that make the laws or take us to wars after all. They're the ones that have to "deal" with the choices of others....and that means civilians. Lazy fucks that never vote, allowing shitheads to gain power are always going to look and celebrate excuses for their failure as citizens. And those that do who are using their power for Evil get what they ask for, while the self-satisfied can "bitch" in the blogosphere....
It's got so bad that I've begun wallowing in that most wholesome of genres, Serials. At least I can see heroes and heroinnes, not a bunch of self-absorbed twits fluffing there auras....

Pat
