Series Review: 'Black Summer'.....
Apr. 14th, 2019 07:26 amMeh. Let's cover the DECENT bits:
The 1st episode- The POV camera style works well and if had continued at the level of the 1st episode it would have helped. Also, the main characters for at least the 1st couple of episodes. These were probably the most "authentic" characters you'd find at the beginning of a ZA. Clueless, expecting and swallowing the gov't line and avoiding "dealing" with the problem themselves. Can't blame the characters too much though, apparently after 3 weeks(or 3 months, another problem with the series) after the outbrake even solders haven't learned or been told only headshots work. The central characters act as real people would in such a scenario, including hiding a bite and endangering your family and others to stay with them(main character's husband).
Now the BAD- A BIG pet peeve of mine in these sort of shows is the Utilities still working. Even in the 3 weeks post scenario the Power would be off(well maybe not if they were near a hydroelectric plant). Grocery store with working fridges?! Pleeez! Also, 3 weeks is time enough for Humans to slough off their "civilization". Soldiers turning into "rapey" warlords, kids going all "Lord of the Flies, etc. As cynical as I am, I'd give Humans much longer before turning Feral.
The ending gives the impression they want to make this an ongoing series but there's really no point. The only Interesting bits were two characters, a Deaf man and a Korean woman with limited English. Their stories would have been a new bit for the genre but the guy died by feral kid, though the Korean woman was one of the 3 who made it to the end so....
Cheers,
Pat
