The 10 Hr Rule...
Jun. 11th, 2010 07:15 amWhen you require 60mg of Morphine a day just to do the normal activities that most folks take for granted, your baseline affect tends toward "grumpy". This is why I came up with the 10 hr Rule. When someone physically or electronically says something absolutely idiotic, I give them 10 hrs. After that, I decide whether I should react or not.
9 hrs for a couple of eejits and counting today on one of my lists;>....

Date: 2010-06-11 07:00 pm (UTC)I've left HT before because some of it's more rabid Universalist members' posts had me dreading openning my mail and I've long decided that Life is too Short to stick around arseholes, even if there are nice folks there(but sitting quietly as to not get Thier Attentions;>).
IMO one of the side effects of the Split was that without the Folkish and Tribalists, many Universalist groups and lists became so "Inclusive" that traffic is little different than your average Pagan one. From the other side, without the Unies to grumble over, the Purists keep "purifying" to the point there's the list owner, their present girlfriend and a couple of their drinking buddies....

Date: 2010-06-12 05:33 am (UTC)You are bang on with the split thing. I've pretty much withdrawn from monitoring elists and forums for so many supposedly heathen venues have become so inclusive as to be not heathen anymore in my eyes, and the folkish have slipped under a cone of silence rendering them invisible. Both sides continue to foster little 'in groups' that only serve as cheerleaders for the egotists to continue building their petty cults. Last I looked heathendom seems to be just spinning its wheels usually going over ground long thought covered. Nothing has been learned from the mistakes of the past. . .and by the gods there have been many. Now I'm just waiting for the next fad to hit heathenry for by my reckoning we are due for some more kookiness to come a'knocking at our hall door.

Date: 2010-06-12 12:46 pm (UTC)1st, when they're new they attract the dissafected who are attracted to the Different and "Shiney". At this stage, pretty much any BS is Beleived.
2nd, they've been around long enough to have enough folks to begin Thinking, which is always Trouble;>. Purges, Splits, etc begin.
3rd, the "Shine" has worn off for those that need the NEWEST THING and only get serious Seekers. Groups/Denominations/etc that have been around a while are leery of noobs because of experience. No longer being "Pop" they drop off the "Neetist Thang" meter.
4th, they become just another religion
Wicca and Heathenry are at 3, IMMHO. Mormonism, JW's are now 4's with Scientologists teetering between 3 and 4, depending on behavior of members...
I see Heathenry's drop off from the "Pop charts" as a Good Thing. Those that are really Interested have to look and study(except where the groups who are still at the Quantity not Quality Stage are still pandering). At least in the Folksih community there's little sympathy for BS. Unfortunately, the Tru Beleiver(tm, pat-pending)feels the need to make things more and more Tru(not necessarily accurate, unfortunately)and will drive those that don't spell Potato(e) the same way they do....
Sadly, the few Unie groups I still keep contact with(as in kindreds, not orgs...Marion;>)have pretty much become Norse Pagan circles if not ritually(though some have gone so far as casting Sacred Space and Quarters), Theologically(good old Aspectual Theology).
I admit to the Beleif that Future Heathenry will evolve out of the Folkish/Tribal groups since they at least are keeping with the Concept of God/desses AS Individuals. Truthfully, Marion's folks are the only Universalists I know that still consider the Regin as Individuals(with the exception of the arguements about Friggas "Handmaidens";>)....

Date: 2010-06-12 04:27 pm (UTC)"Pop" crap being brought in BY Heathens is a different subject than Heathenry being the new "Pop" Spirituality. One of the reasons it didn't do so well the 1st time it came up was that it hapened when Stephen McNallen's view still was the Dominant one and that was both too "Eurocentric" for the Progressives and too much actual Work for the Flakes. With Paganism you simply had to learn a basic Rite and plug in or make up(sorry, be Inspired;>) the rest. Asatru as it was then made you read actual bits of Lore. WAY too much work for some folks. They had to spend Weed money on collegate texts!
'Course, now we have a number of Heathen Ways that require no more actual work than Paganism so we might get Popular again...

Date: 2010-06-11 08:17 pm (UTC)'Course, from my POV it wouldn't have happened if certain folks weren't constantly calling anyone that didn't agree with them Racists and Nazis. Even someone as thick-skinned as I am can find that getting Old...
Luckly, the majority of responses were Sane...which is a major reason I made the 10 Hr Rule. I probably should increase that to the two day Rule on lists with poor traffic like some of my homesteading and preparedness lists. Oh well;>

Date: 2010-06-12 04:20 am (UTC)Thanks for wading into the mists. On reflection, I suspect her answer is that it isn't Odin.
And I'm glad you liked the responses; I was happy to see someone post about the day, and I was likewise happy with the responses. If nothing else, maybe they will now crack a book.

Date: 2010-06-12 12:26 pm (UTC)Sadly, IME most folks, unless forced to by a good teacher will not "Kubler-Ross" their old Beleif-system and just "wallpaper" it with the new one. That's one of the reasons why so many Universalists sound like Pagans and New Agers and so many Folkish/Tribalists sound like Christians. Not that either would admit it;>.
