Eating the Lotus...literally!
Jun. 16th, 2009 07:52 amYesterday, while watching the doves drinking from the Lotus tub in the front yard I noticed two buds. My 1st Lotus blossoms!
Last yr 'Florida Gardening' had an article on growing Lotus here in the "Dangly Bits". Basically, any container that holds more than 15 gallons and is more than 10" deep can be used. A soil of equal amts of Peat, Sand and COmposted Manure fills the 1st 6". Plant the tuber and fill with water. That's It!
While most folks know of it's Spiritual and Ornamental beauty, the Lotus is pretty much the perfect Permaculture plant. Hardy to New England, fast growing(can be Invasive, that's why many states have it on their lists...)edible tubers, leaves and seeds. All you need is enough rainfall to keep at least 4" of water over the roots. A great all around plant!
Cheers,
Pat
