but probably not for the reasons you might think;>. A few yrs ago, Anthony Bourdain made a snide comment(I know)that got me thinking. He was in a traditional Thai market supplying Thai people and grabbed three spices and quipped, "With these, anyone can be a Thai cook!I'm Rachael Raye".
He's RIGHT. While Food Network does expose many folks to foodstuffs they may never have tried, it also teaches that a Food culture is more like a feeling. Sort of like in the late 70's with folks who considered saying "Witch! Witch! Witch!" made them the equal of someone who'd spent yrs studying and apprentacing under an Elder in the Trad.
I can cook. I don't consider me good enough to be called a _____ cook. I do, however when preparing a particular culture's food thier ingredients, techniques and serving methods. The most depressing thing about The Food Network is that it "Americanizes" the vibrant cuisines of all other cultures so housewives in areas with no ASian Immigrants don't feel left out. 'Course, this is nothing new. I have a "Japanese" cookbook cookbook from the 50's that only uses ingredients you'd find in a 50's grocery.
Frightening!
