are what Film, Literature, etc are, Reflections of the world at the time they are created, no matter what the period. One thing I noticed about my fav genres of Horror and Sci-Fi wass the loss of the Knightly. Before the 80's in these genres the lead characters were not just Heroic, they had Knightly Virtues. That is, it weren't all about them. Today's "Hero" generally thinks about themselves and their immediate circle and the the rest of the world a big FU.
I think the worst example recently was the film '28 weeks later' where selfish kids, adults and even soldiers end up wiping out the Human Race through their self-absorbed actions.
It's kind of sad to think of such things as 'Mad Max, Beyond Thunderdome' as showing a much Healthier Humanity. No matter how aweful the folks were, they at least pulled together to SUrvive, even though not in a modern-approved manner. Look at hits today like 'The Walking Dead' where folks fart around never really getting their shit together, wallowing in their "Issues". At least in the books Rick wasn't such a Pussy. The writers on 'The Talking Dead' mentioned that this was on purpose to show that since Rick "Slept Through" the apocalpse, his "Morals" hadn't been damaged by the carnage as the others "had".
I realise I'm a weirdie. My reaction to pretty much all disasters is to "fort up" and then help others. It's worked well through a number of hurricanes and I admit to not having a lot of sympathy for neighbors who a couple of days post still haven't cleared wreckage or begun repairs. Then come to me for help...usually after I've done all the work on my property basically alone(Chuck's not good with chainsaws;>). You know it's a pretty sad state when a Fat old Queen with aids gets more done than the Army or Airforce guys living off-base. And they have KIDS. Good examples the lot....
Luckly, I'll probably be dead beforethe next big "mess" hits and considering they get more and more Useless every storm....
Cheers,
Pat
